Initiatives

Training will be developed to help reduce achievement gaps between students with and without disabilities by implementation of goal initiative within school systems. Changes in pre-service training programs will also incorporate evidence based practices within the SIG goal areas.

Through statewide intensive and extensive teacher training and professional development for teachers, related service personnel, parents, early intervention personnel and para-educators, the reading skills of students with disabilities and other special needs will be improved.

FEATURES
  • Providing staff development teachers in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension
  • Collaborating with Alabama Reading FIRST and Alabama Reading Initiative
  • State-wide staff development in use of DIBELS to make instructional decisions
  • Collaborating with the states Parent Training Information Center
  • Proving technical Assistance School Systems
  • Providing opportunities for teachers to receive training from national leaders in reading
  • Providing training in pre-reading skills to early intervention personnel

Through Positive Behavior Support (PBS) site leadership training for administrators, teachers, para-educators, and parents, the number of students who receive office discipline referrals, suspensions, and/or removals will decrease.

  • Teaches schools how to use the data, systems, practices approach to develop consistent school-wide approach to discipline
  • Creates proactive, predictable, positive learning environment
  • Focuses on preventing inappropriate behavior, rather than employing a reactive, punishing approach to discipline
  • Provides support/intervention to students in the upper tertiary group of inappropriate behavior
  • Specifically teaches staff to recognize and deal with situations to prevent them from becoming office discipline referrals
  • Encourages students to become proactively engaged in the educational process

Through statewide intensive training and professional development for administrators, teachers, related service personnel, para-educators, and parents of students with disabilities will have increased engagement and academic success thereby increasing school attendance and reducing their dropout rate.
