"Positive Behavior Supports is a program that Boaz Intermediate School has been involved in for 5 years…the program just continues to improve how we promote good behavior. Not only has it been a great experience for our students, but also for our faculty to come together."
Counselor Kathy Hutchens

"PBS takes the guess work out of what to do with a student when there is a problem. The expectations of all of the personnel for student behavior is the same. When behavior looks the same, given the same consequences, and is rewarded the same way, by each staff member, the students respond in a more positive way. This creates a more productive and safer learning environment."

Alabama Positive Behavior Supports (PBS)

A major advance in school-wide discipline is the emphasis on school-wide systems of support that include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. Instead of using a patchwork of individual behavioral management plans, a continuum of positive behavior support for all students within a school is implemented in areas including the classroom and nonclassroom settings (such as hallways, restrooms).

Continuum of School-wide Instructional & Positive Behavioral Support

Positive behavior support is an application of a behaviorally-based systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to design effective environments that improve the link between research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all children and youth by making problem behavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional. (http://www.pbis.org/schoolwide.htm)

Implementing a proactive approach to discipline using Positive Behavior Supports, equips school systems with the ability to:

  • Reducing office discipline referrals
  • Reduce suspensions/expulsions
  • Reduce number of students being referred to BBST testing
  • Reduce number of students referred for Special Education testing
  • Decrease dropout rates
  • Increase consistency/morale among staff

Through statewide intensive and extensive teacher training and professional development for teachers, related service personnel, parents, early intervention personnel and para-educators, the reading skills of students with disabilities and other special needs will be improved.
  • Teaches schools how to use Data, Systems, Practices to develop and implement consistent school-wide action plans that address discipline using proactive practices
  • Creates proactive, predictable, positive learning environments
  • Focuses on preventing inappropriate behavior
  • Provides support/intervention for students with more challenging inappropriate behavior
  • Specifically teaches staff to recognize and deal with situations to prevent them from becoming office discipline referrals
  • Teaches schools how to connect and develop relationships between home, school, and community
  • Encourages students to become proactively engaged in their learning environment
  • Provides an environment for students to be responsible for their own behavior, respectful to themselves and others, and resourceful to support good decision making

Expanding of PBS Schools Over 6 Years spacer PBS Trained LEA's

After 6 years of implementing PBS, 226 Alabama schools in 26 LEA's have invested in school-wide PBS. During the summer of 2005, 44 schools and 6 districts received training. Positive Behavior Supports is making a difference in the state of Alabama and continues to experience rapid growth, if you are interested in having your district partner with Alabama Positive Behavior Supports, please email Donna Kirkendoll at: dkirkendoll@alsde.edu or Justin Hill at: jhill@alsde.edu.
